a bit of a setback

We headed out to Springfield yesterday morning with anticipation.

We were hoping that Brian's doctor would release him to start walking. But, we didn't get the news we were hoping for. 6 more weeks on crutches. We both know that we should be happy that he can start putting a little weight on the leg, but it kinda took the wind out of our sails. Neither of us saw this coming (the 6 weeks part) and were sitting in the room stunned. It has been 13 1/2 weeks since the accident.

Brian has been recovering so quickly with the skin grafts and generally from the surgeries and the whole accident that this seemed like a setback to us.

Losing his original surgeon was a bit of a setback (he moved to St. Louis), and the new doctor, while very nice, has decided to take a very cautious approach. I guess that this isn't a bad thing, we certainly don't want to have more surgery or problems. It's just really hard when Brian can't do much for himself. He feels bad that he has to ask me to do just about everything for him. It's hard to get much done when you can't use your hands.

So, we are going to plan our time for the next 6 weeks. We have been waiting for 13 1/2 weeks now and looking back on that time, we see that we could have done so many things. Our days have been filled with a LOT of TV (ugh), some reading and lots of boredom.

I'm going to encourage Brian to do something productive with his 6 weeks. Learn a new language? Play the guitar? Anything to help this time pass quicker! I think it's a good idea to stay as active as possible. I'm also going to research diet and healing broken bones. I love to cook and this will keep my mind occupied as well!

Any suggestions?

  1. Oh Dana, I'm so sorry to hear about the setback. I'm sure it's a real struggle to stay positive, I think reminding yourselves on how far you've come helps - as I know you have been doing! Your ideas of keeping busy is a fantastic idea! A new hobby might be just the ticket!

  2. Jules - thanks for your kind words! I'm going to see about some language tapes. We would love to travel to Italy, so maybe Italian would be fun!

  3. You've got the right attitude. I bet you'll fill up those six weeks and they'll hopefully fly by. A trip to Italy would be good inspiration for sure!

  4. So your husband is Brian?-as well. I keep meeting these ladies with husbands named Bryan-Brian. Well I hope things get better. It's never easy going through any struggle. Stay Strong:)

I would actually like to be wearing some boots and mittens right about now:) It's always funny because the people in cold weather want to be in warm weather and vise versa. Thanks for stopping by my blog.

    I'm a new follower!
