Yesterday Brian had his checkup with the ortho doc in Springfield. We left with hopes that the crutches would be going bye-bye, just like last time. No pictures this time, Brian said it's a little disappointing to see how hopeful he is only to be sorry later. Oh well, I tried. This is his pity party, not mine, I guess I'll play by his rules.
We got to Springfield in time to enjoy a little lunch. It seems that we always eat at Zio's when we go there and it was good! I love their bread and the dipping oil! YUM!
We finished up in time to head over to the dr's office. It wasn't very crowded and in no time we were talking to him and looking at the x-rays. For those of you that don't know, Brian was in a motorcycle accident on July 31. He broke both his legs, his hand and had a few internal injuries. The doc was happy with his left leg (broken femur) and told him he could start putting full weight on it as tolerated and get off the crutches in 2-3 weeks. Brian proceeded to tell him that he'd probably be off the crutches in a week. He thinks he can do everything faster ( might be why he had the accident??? just sayin')
We stopped at Akins for a few items. I have to say that I was disappointed in Akins. They didn't have 3 of the things I wanted and when you have to drive all that way, I just expect they should have it. Not fair of me I know, but it is what it is!
We headed home and last night Brian took a few steps without the crutches. His leg is weak and sore when he walks, but he did it!
So, now we just wait for the right leg to finish healing. The doc told us that it is looking like another procedure is needed, but we'll be waiting until after the new year begins.

a bit of a setback
We headed out to Springfield yesterday morning with anticipation.

We were hoping that Brian's doctor would release him to start walking. But, we didn't get the news we were hoping for. 6 more weeks on crutches. We both know that we should be happy that he can start putting a little weight on the leg, but it kinda took the wind out of our sails. Neither of us saw this coming (the 6 weeks part) and were sitting in the room stunned. It has been 13 1/2 weeks since the accident.
Brian has been recovering so quickly with the skin grafts and generally from the surgeries and the whole accident that this seemed like a setback to us.
Losing his original surgeon was a bit of a setback (he moved to St. Louis), and the new doctor, while very nice, has decided to take a very cautious approach. I guess that this isn't a bad thing, we certainly don't want to have more surgery or problems. It's just really hard when Brian can't do much for himself. He feels bad that he has to ask me to do just about everything for him. It's hard to get much done when you can't use your hands.
So, we are going to plan our time for the next 6 weeks. We have been waiting for 13 1/2 weeks now and looking back on that time, we see that we could have done so many things. Our days have been filled with a LOT of TV (ugh), some reading and lots of boredom.
I'm going to encourage Brian to do something productive with his 6 weeks. Learn a new language? Play the guitar? Anything to help this time pass quicker! I think it's a good idea to stay as active as possible. I'm also going to research diet and healing broken bones. I love to cook and this will keep my mind occupied as well!
Any suggestions?
