Friday Challenge - something old, something new

I have been so tired lately and now I know why.  I'm coming down with a cold or it could be allergies.  I think I've just been fighting it off and now it is here.  Too bad!  We were going to go out of town this weekend, but Brian is getting a sore throat too, so we decided to just hang around the house.

I like to play it by ear when I am not feeling 100%.  I will usually do some yoga or stretching, but try not to push it, especially if it is respiratory.  If it is something else, some light cardio is usually the best thing for me.

FRIDAY CHALLENGE!!

Today's challenge is a little different from in the past, but not much, don't worry!!  I am going to challenge you to do a workout you haven't tried before.  Yoga, kickboxing, swimming, use a new machine at the gym.  Whatever you have been wanting to try.  If you do yoga, but haven't done Bikram (hot yoga) then try it!  Change things up.  Our bodies get used to doing the same thing.  If you don't workout, then do one today.  If you only walk, kick it up a notch and try alternating walking and jogging.  You will use your muscles differently and you will be glad you did.  Please leave me a comment on what you do, I love to see what you are doing!

Yesterday's food:

If you see something that I am posting and would like the recipe, please let me know.  I'm happy to share!!

We all get stuck in a food rut occasionally and I love to try new things too!  Let me know and I'll get it posted!

Breakfast was my usual- Shakeology - Mighty Maple - YUM!

lunch was at the japanese steakhouse.  salad and miso soup

edamame - shared!!

veggie and tuna roll

snack was banana with coconut milk yogurt and topped with some granola

dinner was salad with sesame oil and veggie chili stuffed potato with a dollop of vegannaise and sprinkld with daiya cheddar

wanted something sweet so I had a small bowl of Soy Dream with chocolate sauce and cinnamon

Water was all I had to drink - 64 oz.
Workout was nothing formal - danced and stretched.  Also cleaned like a mad woman at a rental house.  Had sweat dripping everywhere!!

The sweet little waitress at the japanese steakhouse was so funny.  She told me - you eat like a bird.  I thought I had a lot of food, didn't finish the salad - way too much dressing, so picked around at it and I left 2 pcs of the rolls.  It was pretty funny!

Discussion:  do you get stuck in a food and workout rut?  Do you workout when you aren't feeling your best?  Push through or take it easy?

Frankenfish? What next?

I saw on tv the other day that they are holding hearings on allowing geneticaly modified salmon.  I can't even imagine what this will be leading too.  I did a little research on it and found a couple of interesting articles.

Ten Resason to Reject a Suspicious Fish

FDA rules won't require labeling of genetically modified salmon

The United States' Food and Drug Administration is in the midst of public hearings to determine if it will approve AquaBounty Technologies' application for fish spawned from genetically engineered salmon eggs to be allowed for use as food. These "AquAdvantage® Salmon" grow into full-sized fish in half the time that it would take a regular salmon, and if approved, would become the first "transgenic" or genetically engineered animals to be approved for human consumption.

What exactly is Genetically Modified mean?  Genetic engineering entails introducing desirable traits of one living being into another, using recombinant DNA , or rDNA technology.   Source

I'm just not comfortable with eating genetically modified foods.   Why mess with the original???
What do you think about this?

Here are my eats for yesterday and there is nothing GM about it!  Thank goodness!!

Breakfast - Shakeology (german chocolate!!)

Lunch - Veggie Chili with a few fritos, couple of bites of Madelyn's roasted veggies and cucumber (the chili was too spicy for her)

How could you resist this adorable face wanting to share with you???

Snack - guacamole with salsa and blue corn tortilla chips - forgot to take photo!

Salad Domination!!!

Dinner:  Salad with tons of veggies and beans, balsamic dressing, veggie burger minis , I ate one and left the other and a few of the fries.  I told them not to bring the fries, but they did and I had to have a few - they are soo tasty!  BUT, I didn't eat them all!!! Yay me!

Workout - walked pushing Madelyn in her stroller - probably 2 miles
Water - 68 oz.  didn't drink anything else - even though I really wanted that blackberry margarita at dinner :)

Discussion:  Do you try to avoid GM foods or does it matter to you?

Cleopatra's Daughter - giveaway!!

I have posted before about reading Michelle Moran's books, Nefertiti, The Heretic Queen and Cleopatra's Daughter.  I LOVED these books.  I am so excited to have a guest post from the author herself!!

Life and Libraries in the Ancient World

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked by readers is what life was like two thousand years ago when Julius Caesar walked the corridors of the Senate house and Cleopatra visited Rome. Surprisingly, life for the ancient Romans was not unbelievably different from today. The Romans had many of the little luxuries that we often associate exclusively with the modern world. For example, baths were to be found in every city, and public toilets were viewed as a necessity. The toilets depicted in HBO’s Rome Series are copies of those discovered in Pompeii, where those caught short could find a long stretch of latrines (much like a long bench with different sized holes) and relieve themselves next to their neighbor. Shops sold a variety of wigs, and women could buy irons to put curls their hair. For the rain, there were umbrellas, and for the sun, parasols. Houses for the wealthy were equipped with running water and were often decorated quite lavishly, with elaborate mosaics, painted ceilings, and plush carpets.

In the markets, the eager shopper could find a rich array of silks, along with linen and wool. You could also find slaves, and in this, Roman times certainly differ from our own. While some men spoke out against it, one in three people were enslaved. Most of these slaves came from Greece, or Gaul (an area roughly comprising modern France). Abuse was rampant, and the misery caused by this led desperate men like Spartacus to risk death for freedom.

For those few who were free and wealthy, however, life in Rome provided nearly endless entertainments. As a child, there were dolls and board games to be played with, and as an adult, there was every kind of amusement to be had, from the theatre to the chariot races. Even the poor could afford “bread and circuses,” which, according to Juvenal, was all the Romans were really interested in.

For those more academic minded, however, there were libraries. Although I don’t portray this in Cleopatra’s Daughter, libraries were incredibly noisy places. The male scholars and patrons read aloud to themselves and each other, for nothing was ever read silently (the Romans believed it was impossible!). Other cities were renowned for their learning, too: Pergamum (or Pergamon) was the largest and grandest library in the world. Built by the Greeks, Pergamum became Roman property when Greece was captured and many of its people enslaved. The library was said to be home to more than 200,000 volumes, and it is was in Pergamum that the history of writing was forever changed.

Built by Eumenes II, Pergamum inspired great jealousy in the Egyptian Ptolemies, who believed that their Library of Alexandria was superior. In order to cripple this Greek rival (and also because of crop shortages), Egypt ceased exporting papyrus, on which all manuscripts were written. Looking for an alternative solution, the Library of Pergamum began using parchment, or charta pergamena. For the first time, manuscripts were now being written on thin sheets of calf, sheep or goat’s skin. The result of this change from papyrus to parchment was significant. Now, knowledge could be saved by anyone with access to animal hide. Manuscripts (although still quite rare) were now available to more people. Alas, so impressive was this vast Pergamese library of parchment that Cleopatra asked Marc Antony to ship its entire contents to her as a wedding gift. This transfer marked the end of Pergamum’s scholarly dominance, and is the reason why, today, we remember Alexandria as possessing the ancient world’s greatest library.

Yesterday's Meals:

I did pretty good yesterday.  I ate more fresh fruit and veggies and less concentrated foods.

Breakfast was Shakeology with coconut oil (1 tsp) and peanut butter (1 tbsp) - no photo

Mid-morning snack was cantaloupe

Lunch was Chili Plus.  Handful of fritos on the bottom, top with lettuce  ( I used spinach leaves), brown rice, veggie chili (homemade) and 1 tsp of vegannaise and some Daiya Cheddar.  So good!! One of the best things about fall/winter is being able to have chili plus!!

Afternoon snack was frozen blackberries with a little agave nectar and coconut milk yogurt and cinnamon YUM!

Dinner was roasted veggies.  I kept it light because I had to go workout at Fit Club.  I don't like to have anything heavy before a workout.   I ate this about 1 1/2 hours before workout!

At Fit Club, we tasted Shakeology, so I had a small cup of that - Chocolate shakeology with banana.  Maybe 2 oz.  There was 6 new people at Fit Club last night.  I was so excited.  I love it when we have a good group of fun people!  Thank you to all that showed up!

I need to get more water in.  I think I had about 48 oz yesterday.  I didn't drink anything else either.  So, I'm a little dry today!

Workout was 1 mile walk/jog/run and Burn it off and part of Slim and Limber.

Big News Last Night!!!

I had a good day yesterday.  I have been so tired lately.  Not sure what is going on, but I'm dealing with it.  I've been this way for a couple of weeks now.  Just so stinkin' tired.  So, I'm trying to eat healthier and get my workouts done so I can keep my immune system strong.

I'm still trying to drink enough water.  I am really struggling with it right now.  I've been keeping my water bottle filled, but I just am not drinking enough.  So, that will be my focus again today!

I will post if I have something other than water to drink, but usually that is all that I drink.

Here are my meals from yesterday:

Thin Mint Shakeology

The last of the veggie soup with a few crackers. I topped it with nutritional yeast.

Snack was a cherry sno-cone.  I was trying out the new sno-cone maker, getting ready for the big PARTY tonight!  (more details to come)

I also had a handful of those darned tortilla chips.  I need those to be gone, baby gone!

We went to Olive Garden for dinner with friends.  Good salad and extra peppers!

Linguine with marinara sauce, hold the cheese please!

One margarita!

Then we went to the movies and saw The Town with Ben Affleck.  The movie was good, but it was hard to find someone to cheer for.  But, Ben looked good!

The best news of the evening, Nick and Lauren got engaged last night!  I am so excited for them and can not wait to have Lauren "officially" in the family!  They have dated since 8th grade.  We love Lauren!!!  She is a part of our family!

Discussion:  Do you have trouble getting your water in?  How do you make it happen?  Also, have you seen any good movies lately?

No internet? No good!

Good FRIDAY Morning!!!  Whoo-hoo, it's the weekend!!

I am sorry for no post yesterday, we didn't have internet connection most of the day and I had to go to Brian's office picnic as soon as I got it up and running!  So, I'll be doing Thursday's post now and then I'll be back with a Friday Challenge Video!

My eating the last few days hasn't been stellar.  It hasn't been horrible, just not enough fresh fruits and veggies and too many tortilla chips.  Those darn chips are my downfall and I should just not keep them in the house.

Wednesday Eats:

Breakfast was a Snickers Shakeology - no photo, sorry.

Lunch was a thin bun toasted with a smear of vegan cream cheese, salmon and green onion - sooo good.  I have been craving salmon lately and I find that I do better if I just have some!!

I also had a fruit and bean salsa with some tortilla chips!

I was feeling snacky when Madelyn took her nap, so I had some of the Cheezy sauce, added salsa to it and more of the wonderful tortilla chips!

Dinner was veggie fried rice and a veggie egg roll.  I forgot to take a photo, it was not homemade either!

Thursday Eats:

Breakfast was a German Chocolate Shakeology - again no photo!!

I went to clean a rental property and Brian came over and convinced me ( ok, it wasn't very hard) to go to breakfast for lunch.

Hillbilly Hashbrowns - full of green peppers, onion, mushrooms and tomatoes.  It was HUGE  I couldn't even begin to eat it all.

Snackage included several of these bad boys!!!

YUMMY!

I ate an early dinner since I knew we were going to Brian's office picnic and there wouldn't be much for me to eat there!

Veggie soup with leftover fried rice, topped with Parma and Garlic Gold!

At the picnic I had a spoonful of potato salad and some pickles and onions.  I didn't take a photo, all of Brian's co-workers already think I'm weird enough......

Highlights of the last couple of days!

Madelyn was here and we played outside.  She is obsessed with sitting in chairs. ALL of them!  And, I felt so bad, she fell and scraped her eye on a book.  She was bringing me the book to read and landed on it when she fell.  I hate that!

Madelyn was also obsessed with the little frogs on our front porch.  They are so cute, we have 3 of them and she wanted to give them a kiss.  Is this a Prince, waiting to be released?????

Brian and I at the Pro 100  Picnic and with our winnings!!  Two rounds of golf at the Briarbook Country Club!

I was holding out for the cookies, but it didn't work out the way I wanted, but the cutest little girls won these!!!

I'll be back this afternoon with a Friday Challenge you won't want to miss!!!

Fit Club Tuesday!

I am so excited for the first Fit Club at the CJ Community Center!!  I can't wait to see everyone!!  We are going to have a blast, so if you are in the area, please join us!  TONIGHT @ 7 PM!!!

Bring a mat, water and a towel!  Try the workouts you've seen on the infomercials and see if you love them as much as I do!

I'm not sure what workout we will do tonight.  It is going to depend on who shows up.  We can decide as a group.  But, I promise, it will be fun!!

FIT CLUB RECIPE:

Bean Tostadas:

I made these last night for dinner. It took 10 mins.  Luckily, I had everything pretty much ready.

I make my own refried beans - just cook the type of beans you like (or you can use canned) add a little vegetable broth and put in the blender or food processor.  Get it to the desired consistency.  Add in a little chili powder, salt and garlic ( jalepeno if you like it spicier!!)  Then heat them on the stovetop.

I used leftover salad for the topping - lettuce, tomatoes, onion, olives, cucumber, carrots, whatever you like on your tacos.  I like a LOT of veggies.

Spread the beans on corn tostadas or you can use tortillas, top with the salad and then salsa and veggie sour cream or veganaise.

Since I am on a mission to really eat clean and stay on track for the next 30 days.  I am going to be posting my meals here.  If I don't - I want you all to call me out on it!!

I didn't take a photo of my breakfast yesterday, but I had a chocolate shakeology.  I know that will surprise you!!!

Lunch was veggie soup with wild rice and a slice of sourdough bread with Earth Balance

I also had a second slice of the bread and slathered it with homemade peach butter! (thanks Hermina!!)

Brian and I were going out to run errands, so I made a decaf chai latte with almond milk to take with us!

Bean Tostadas - there might have been a third......

bowl of homemade applesauce with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon ( again, thanks to Hermina!)

I didn't get enough water yesterday, so that is what I am focusing on today!

You might be seeing some of the same meals today - I have a LOT of veggie soup left!!

Be on the lookout for a review of Get-It-Done Guy's 9 Steps to Work Less and Do More.  The book launches today and I am really looking forward to getting it!  I love reading personal development books.  Brian and I are going to both give our opinions on it.

Order your copy here!!!

DISCUSSION:  Do you read personal development books?  If so, what are your favorites?  I loved The Slight Edge and highly recommend it as well!  I may have to start a book club and we can all read our books together and discuss them!!  Thoughts?
