Cleopatra's Daughter - giveaway!!

I have posted before about reading Michelle Moran's books, Nefertiti, The Heretic Queen and Cleopatra's Daughter.  I LOVED these books.  I am so excited to have a guest post from the author herself!!

Life and Libraries in the Ancient World

One of the most frequent questions I’m asked by readers is what life was like two thousand years ago when Julius Caesar walked the corridors of the Senate house and Cleopatra visited Rome. Surprisingly, life for the ancient Romans was not unbelievably different from today. The Romans had many of the little luxuries that we often associate exclusively with the modern world. For example, baths were to be found in every city, and public toilets were viewed as a necessity. The toilets depicted in HBO’s Rome Series are copies of those discovered in Pompeii, where those caught short could find a long stretch of latrines (much like a long bench with different sized holes) and relieve themselves next to their neighbor. Shops sold a variety of wigs, and women could buy irons to put curls their hair. For the rain, there were umbrellas, and for the sun, parasols. Houses for the wealthy were equipped with running water and were often decorated quite lavishly, with elaborate mosaics, painted ceilings, and plush carpets.

In the markets, the eager shopper could find a rich array of silks, along with linen and wool. You could also find slaves, and in this, Roman times certainly differ from our own. While some men spoke out against it, one in three people were enslaved. Most of these slaves came from Greece, or Gaul (an area roughly comprising modern France). Abuse was rampant, and the misery caused by this led desperate men like Spartacus to risk death for freedom.

For those few who were free and wealthy, however, life in Rome provided nearly endless entertainments. As a child, there were dolls and board games to be played with, and as an adult, there was every kind of amusement to be had, from the theatre to the chariot races. Even the poor could afford “bread and circuses,” which, according to Juvenal, was all the Romans were really interested in.

For those more academic minded, however, there were libraries. Although I don’t portray this in Cleopatra’s Daughter, libraries were incredibly noisy places. The male scholars and patrons read aloud to themselves and each other, for nothing was ever read silently (the Romans believed it was impossible!). Other cities were renowned for their learning, too: Pergamum (or Pergamon) was the largest and grandest library in the world. Built by the Greeks, Pergamum became Roman property when Greece was captured and many of its people enslaved. The library was said to be home to more than 200,000 volumes, and it is was in Pergamum that the history of writing was forever changed.

Built by Eumenes II, Pergamum inspired great jealousy in the Egyptian Ptolemies, who believed that their Library of Alexandria was superior. In order to cripple this Greek rival (and also because of crop shortages), Egypt ceased exporting papyrus, on which all manuscripts were written. Looking for an alternative solution, the Library of Pergamum began using parchment, or charta pergamena. For the first time, manuscripts were now being written on thin sheets of calf, sheep or goat’s skin. The result of this change from papyrus to parchment was significant. Now, knowledge could be saved by anyone with access to animal hide. Manuscripts (although still quite rare) were now available to more people. Alas, so impressive was this vast Pergamese library of parchment that Cleopatra asked Marc Antony to ship its entire contents to her as a wedding gift. This transfer marked the end of Pergamum’s scholarly dominance, and is the reason why, today, we remember Alexandria as possessing the ancient world’s greatest library.

Lunch was Chili Plus.  Handful of fritos on the bottom, top with lettuce  ( I used spinach leaves), brown rice, veggie chili (homemade) and 1 tsp of vegannaise and some Daiya Cheddar.  So good!! One of the best things about fall/winter is being able to have chili plus!!

Afternoon snack was frozen blackberries with a little agave nectar and coconut milk yogurt and cinnamon YUM!

Dinner was roasted veggies.  I kept it light because I had to go workout at Fit Club.  I don't like to have anything heavy before a workout.   I ate this about 1 1/2 hours before workout!

At Fit Club, we tasted Shakeology, so I had a small cup of that - Chocolate shakeology with banana.  Maybe 2 oz.  There was 6 new people at Fit Club last night.  I was so excited.  I love it when we have a good group of fun people!  Thank you to all that showed up!

I had a good day yesterday!  Eating was clean, got to workout with friends, met some new people and spent time with the fam!  Doesn't get much better than that for me!

My eating plan is still going strong.  I do need to work on drinking more water.  I know that when I don't get enough water, I get stuffy nosed, tired and a bit cranky.  (hard to believe, I'm sure!)  So, today I am focusing on WATER, WATER and more WATER!

I'm going to add some lime slices and maybe even make some limeade.  ( I have limes that need to be used!) I love to add fruit or even cucumbers to my water.  It's nice to have a little flavor, tons of ice and drink away!

Here are my meals from yesterday:

German Chocolate Shakeology

Veggie Soup with wild rice and "cheezy" bread

Side salad with tomato vinagrette dressing
whole wheat pasta with mushrooms and onion and humnut sauce

I also had an apple, but didn't take a photo!

Discussion:  do you have a "focus" for each day?  I find that I do better if I do!

Girls Trip!

I know that I have blogged about my trip to San Diego, but I want to look at it from a different angle.  This was an all girls trip and we had a blast, but friendships were made and will not be forgotten.

We started off by getting together Thursday night at the Sundeck at the Hotel Del Coranado.  Some of the girls I was good friends with already and others I got to meet for the first time.  We had a blast, hanging out, chatting and getting to know each other better. Even though this was a "working" weekend, we knew we would be having fun!  Thunder Bob was celebrating his mother's life and he joined in our fun and bought us drinks and we enjoyed our time with him.  There was some singing (see my facebook video), a bit of a throwdown (plank challenge) and just lots of laughter.

Friday morning we had small group breakfast and beach time!  What fun that was.  While we were on the beach, we were sharing ideas for our businesses, talking about family, and more fun! We explored the island and shared a great lunch!

Friday night was the first official meeting.  Monica's mother was kind enough to allow all 25 of us to be in her home (condo on the beach!!!) and the apartment was beautiful, almost as beautiful as Monica's mom, Lisa. She shared a beautiful toast.  I will post it at a later time, it deserves it's on post! We got the most amazing swag bags full of goodies.  We each shared our stories and let me tell you, these women have the most amazing stories, rags to riches, debilitating illnesses to great health and overall beautiful people!

It was a long night, but we enjoyed hearing every one's stories. Those of us not on pacific time were really feeling the time change.  Especially the east coasters.  I'm so glad that they hung in there to the end!

After a short night's sleep, we were up bright and early for yoga in the park with Missy Costello (Tony Horton's personal chef!)  She is such a breath of fresh air!  So sweet and led us in a great workout!

We then had a little beach time and then the big night!  Monica and Melissa arranged for the pavilion on the beach for the meeting!  It was amazing.  The tables were beautiful, we worked on our dream/vision notebooks and had a wonderful meal, danced and got ready to receive more inspiration and a wonderful presentation from Denise Needham.  Talk about an inspiring, beautiful woman!

It was the most awesome evening and I have learned so much on this trip.  I have met so many great leaders and can only inspire to do the same for other people.  I can't wait for the next trip!

I gave my Friendship Stones to my roomies!  Sherri, Tina and Dani! In our busy weekend, I can not believe that we forgot to get a photo with our stones, but we did.  It truly was a busy weekend! We really had a great time and lot of fun when we were so tired and giggly in the room.  Some of the best conversations were had while we were in our beds in the dark trying to go to sleep.  I have so many memories from this trip that I know I will never forget and am so grateful to have been able to spend time with these truly wonderful ladies!

Get Fit Sneakers by Grasshopper - GIVEAWAY!!!!

We have all seen them and wondered if they worked, well, I've tried them and now I can share my experience with you all!

Grasshopper Performance Platforms have the Get Fit technology that is designed with your health and wellnees in mind.  The Get Fit technology in the forefoot and has a soft compression heel that when the two combine activates your muscles and encourages them to work harder.  Every step will tone key muscle groups and burn more calories with your daily walking.

Some of the Key Benefits include:

Helps increase muscle activity to help tone core muscle groups
Helps to burn more calories
Works your buttocks, hamstrings, claves and quads

I wore the shoes around the house and then walked with them for several days.  I expected to have sore calves, but they weren't at all.  The shoes are comfortable and take just a little bit to get used to.  I felt a little unstable at first, but got used to them pretty quickly.  The shoes seem to be well made and I think they will last a long time!  I was able to get my normal sneaker size. The fit was good.

I did let a friend try them as well and this is what she had to say:

What I noticed right away about these shoes was that they are not heavy. I have bad feet and a bad back and I don't need to wear anything that is heavy. These were light and made me feel secure and stonger than normal. They have a built in in-sole which seems to provide stability. I normally don't feel "wobbly", but these made me feel as though I were in a lot better shape and stronger in my posture than normal. You can tell that they are made by a company that knows a lot about not only feet, but the way the body is interconnected. They made a good shoe, and that allows not only your back but your body, mind and soul to feel good while you are wearing them!

The Get Fit shoes are exclusive to HSN and HSN.com by inventor and entrepreneur Joy Mangano.  The sneakers are available in a lace up and slip on style.  They come in 3 colors, Champagne, Silver Grey and White.  The Get Fit sneakers retail at $74.95.

Looks like homegirl needs a little lotion on those legs :)

The best thing is that they have decided to sponsor a giveaway so you can win a pair for yourself to try!  WHOO-HOO!!!!  I love a good giveaway!

Good Morning!  I'm so sorry that I haven't been posting.  My computer is down and I have to use Brian's when it is available.  I am hoping to get my computer fixed this week.  It's really been hard trying to get any work done ( most of my work is done online) and I'm going through withdrawal!

If you have been reading my blog for long, you know how I love to journal.  I keep a pretty detailed journal with my food log, workouts, to-do list and goals.  I also include a gratitude statement every day!  I find that when I do this, I stay on track, get more done and accomplish those goals quicker.

Carolina Pad recently sent me some adorable journals, notebooks and business card holders.  These would be a great graduation gift, or just great for you to start your own journal.  Brian is going to start keeping a journal of our trips.  I think this is a GREAT idea and can not wait  to read what he has to write.  He's pretty talented in so many ways, but he is one really funny storyteller!

Mrs. Renfro Salsa

In San Antonio we got to try a lot of salsa. I love salsa and usually eat some every week. I was so grateful to be able to try Mrs. Renfro's salsas! They are very tasty!! I received Black Bean Salsa ( my fave!), Raspberry Chipotle, Tequila and Mild Chow Chow. We have been enjoying these salsas for the last week or so.

Black Bean is soo good. It's not too spicy, but has great flavor. I loved it with my "cheese sauce". It made a great snack.

Raspberry Chipotle is a sweet salsa and is great as a sauce as well. I like it on tofu! Brian liked it on his chicken.

Tequila is a just as good. I like it plain with tortilla chips!

Mild Chow Chow is just good! I love to put it on beans and rice. My grandma used to make the best chow chow and this is close to it!! Hard to beat Grandma's!

Mrs. Renfro's has been in business for 70 years and they are hosting a recipe contest to celebrate! Enter today for your chance to win salsa for a year!

Be sure to follow Renfro Foods on facebook and twitter!

Tequila Sunrise Fish Tacos
This recipe was developed for Renfro Foods by Carol Ritchie!

Carol's Commentary:
I love tacos of all kinds, especially fish tacos! Enhanced with a double dose of Mrs. Renfro's Tequila Salsa, these tacos are delicious for dinner with a salt-rimmed margarita, or even for breakfast with a champagne-and-freshly-squeezed-orange-juice mimosa.

Ingredients:
•1 cup Mrs. Renfro's Tequila Salsa
•1 tablespoon olive oil
•1 pound tilapia fish fillets
•8 corn tortillas, warmed
•1/2 cup cole slaw mix
Instructions:
In a shallow bowl, mix 1/2 cup Mrs. Renfro's Tequila Salsa with olive oil. Add fish fillets, turn to coat, and marinate for 10 minutes. Grill over medium heat for 4 minutes per side, until fish is cooked through. Place slices of fish into tortillas, garnish with cole slaw, and spoon remaining salsa on top.

I was so very lucky to have Tribest send me a personal blender. This little blender is pretty cool! I've been using it about 2 weeks now and I'm sold. It makes smoothies so easy and I love that I don't have to dirty up another glass to drink them!

The Tribest PB-250 is a blender and grinder combo! You can take this with you anywhere, it is lightweight and portable. The 200 watt motor is strong enough to grind up the ice and it has 2 mode operations: pulse blending/grinding and continuous blending/grinding.

The grinder is great for flax seeds, nuts and coffee beans and herbs.

The cups are BPA free and easy to clean. Just hand wash and go. You don't want to put them into the dishwasher. I find that if I just rinse my cup after drinking/eating, then it is a breeze to clean up. BPA is Bisphenol-A. This is a hormone-disrupting chemical that can be harmful to our health and/or the environment. It is also thought that if your plastic bottles or containers are scratched or worn the BPA may leach into our foods. I find that it is best to avoid it when possible. I love the commuter lid. It is great to take in the car!

The only drawback I have found is that at times it is hard to get the blending attachment on correctly. A couple of times, I had to work with it for quite some time before I got it on properly so that it would work.

I have been very happy with the way the Tribest PB250 has worked for me and I am so happy that Tribest has been kind enough to host a giveaway to one lucky reader! This is so much better than the Magic Bullet. Jake was trying to gain weight during wrestling season (not the norm, I know...) and was drinking protein shakes twice a day. He burnt up the motor in the Magic Bullet. The Tribest PB 250 has a much stronger motor and will last, even through Jake :)

Jo-Sha - be clean, be calm

Keeping your yoga mats or gym equipment clean can be difficult. Jo-Sha wipes have made this so much easier and they come in several different aromas. These wipes can be used not only for your mat or equipment, but also for your hands or feet.

The wonderful thing about these cleaning wipes is the aromatherapy aspect. These wipes smell so good. Lavender is soothing, tangerine is uplifting and there are many scents to choose from. Jo-Sha wipes are all natural and I love knowing that they will not harm my body or the mat. They are also bio-degradable and naturally anti-bacterial.

I've been keeping these in my workout area and have thrown some in my purse and car. They are handy and easy to use! I use them on the yoga mats in the gym area and they are great! They don't leave the mats sticky, it dries quickly and smells so good and clean. The wipes are also handy in the car and in my purse.

The wonderful people at Jo-Sha sent me enough wipes that I can offer up a giveaway! I have a large pack of Lavender and Tea Tree wipes and sample sizes of different scents.

Save your world

I love trying out new beauty products and Save Your World sent me some great products to try!

Save Your World is a wonderful company! Not only do they have some great products, they also save the world!! Every product that we purchase equal 1 acre of rainforest that is saved for one year. How awesome is that? You get to have great products and help save the earth at the same time!

I found this great quote on the Save Your World website:

We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors;
we borrow it from our children.
- Native American Proverb
I tried the Save Your Hair shampoo and conditioner in the oasis fruit and rainforest flavors. I loved the oasis fruit. The rainforest smelled a little like men's cologne to me. That is not a bad thing, just what it reminded me of.

Save Your Body lotion in pure mist has a nice light fragrance and feels good. It isn't greasy and really moisturized my skin. I have pretty dry skin in the winter months, seems I can't get enough fluids. I also tried the Save Your Body exfoliating and moisturizing bar in regal blossom and I liked it.

My favorite product was the lip balm. I'm a bit of a lip balm addict. So, I really like a good balm. I used the grapefruit mango. I'm all about the citrus you know... The lip balm is made with coconut oil, mango and antioxidents.

I have a set of samples for you to win! YAY!!!

One lucky reader will get:

Shampoo and Conditioner samples in Rainforest and Oasis fruit

Body Lotion sample in pure mist

Illuminate Your Life

I love yoga! It is so calming and centering for me. I have been hooked for several years now and try to incorporate it into my workout routine atleast a couple of times per week. It may just be a few sun salutations in the morning or a full blown yoga workout. I do like to know that I've worked out, so I like my yoga to be challenging.

One thing that you need when doing yoga is a GREAT yoga mat. I found Aurorae Yoga Mats and have fallen in yoga love!! These mats are extra thick and extra long (72") so that you don't have your arms or feet hanging off the ends when doing stretches. They are durable and it also has a great focal point so that you keep your neck in neutral spine and keep your concentration in line as well. This really helps to get the postures correct.

Aurorae Yoga Mats come in 5 different colors so you can pick the one that best suits your personality.

The yoga mat colors are:

Violet - Spiritual, soothing, calming, telepathic, healing, relief and meditative

Seamist - Soothing, renewal, intellect, nature, self control, gentile and harmony

Solar - Creative, inspiring, energy, compassionate, warmth, family and stability
Ocean - Relaxation, sedate, caring, cooking, spirit, trustworthy and attentive

Infinity - Strength, sophistication, professionalism, potential of endless possibilities

I have the Solar mat and love it!

The wonderful people at Aurorae Yoga have offered to host a giveaway!! YAY!! One of you lucky readers can win the mat of your choice.

Here's how to enter:
Go to Aurorae Yoga and tell me which color mat you would choose and why. Leave me a comment here.

Oh Goody!

When you are working out, do you have hair problems? I can't stand to have my hair flopping in my face when I'm working out. I am always looking out for ways to keep it out of my face. I get really sweaty and my hair is all over the place if I don't keep it under control!

Goody recently sent me some great products that will help with this! They have a new line of Ouchless accessories. I've been trying these out and really like them for working out! It keeps the hair out of my face and doesn't tug or pull or pinch! That's a HUGE plus in my eyes!

The Ouchless Flex Comfort Flex Claw clips are good to keep the hair out of my face. I don't have super thick hair to begin with, but I had to use two of these clips to hold my hair in sections. They aren't very big. They work really well though! they have curved teeth to prevent digging and they have flexible wings that give when you lean back, so laying on the floor doing crunches, you don't have to take them out.

The Ouchless Flex Pressure-Free Headbands also worked really well during the workouts. I like that these kept the hair off my face and didn't dig into my head. I did try wearing them all day and found that after several hours, my head was feeling it. I had to take it off for a while. I have a tendency to have this problem and it can give me a headache. I didn't get a headache with these, but I did feel some pressure after several hours. My grandma wore it when she was hear for Thanksgiving and didn't have the same problem at all. She wore it all day and had no complaints. It could just be me! I did like that the tips of the headband were labeled as to which side of your head they go on and they had a little padding.

The brushes were great! I really liked the Ouchless Comfort Gel hair brush! These come in fun colors and Goody has one for everyone. It is designed for each hair type: Fine, Medium, Thick, Vent, Paddle, Kids and purse size.

The Ouchless Gentle Flex Hot Rounds Collection of brushes are ceramic barrel hot rounds that have three sizes for short, medium and long hair and have a quick release button at the top of the brush to retract bristles for easy hair removal. NO more tangled messes with your brush and tears trying to pull it out!

I have a black headband and a set of the Flexible Claws to give away! YAY!!
